Illusion functions as a threshold image—an invitation into a mode of seeing in which the familiar becomes unstable. Framed through a vivid, shifting aperture, the landscape appears both seductively real and perceptually impossible: a lake and distant mountains come into view while the surrounding forms dissolve into a chromatic, dreamlike field. The image feels at once like a portal, a memory, and a visual event in the act of becoming.

Rather than treating illusion as deception, the work approaches it as a condition of perception. It holds the viewer between recognition and disorientation, where depth, color, and spatial logic begin to loosen. Landscape remains legible, yet heightened palette and optical instability transform it into something uncanny and immersive.

Illusion extends Wexler’s long-standing exploration of improbable realities into a contemporary perceptual register. The work does not ask the viewer simply to believe or disbelieve what is seen; it asks them to inhabit the suspended space between those responses, where looking becomes an experience of uncertainty, projection, and discovery.
